In the first part of this article I talked about content being king. This is true. One thing to keep in mind is that content can be presented in many different ways. There is a good way to display text information and a not so good way. I hope this article will help you to decide the best way to present your pages to your visitors.

How to Use Keywords

When creating pages for your small business website you must keep keywords in mind. Keywords are the words you would like people to use to find you when they use a search engine such as Google or Bing.

You need to pick keywords that are what your website is about. If your website is a dog training website you would not choose keywords like “SEO” and “web hosting.” You would choose words like “best dog training techniques” and “help your dog be more obedient.”

You can use Google’s keyword tool to help you find other keywords based upon your web pages and keywords. Just do a search in Google for keyword tool. This will help you to know what keywords are popular and which ones are highly competitive.

The tool is actually used for Adsense. Don’t let this fool you. It’s a great research tool. You will need to look for keywords that are popular, but not competitive. It takes some time, but is well worth it.

Keep these keywords in mind when you create your articles. Use them in titles and in the context of the article where they appear naturally. You don’t need to focus heavily on the keywords if you are writing about what your site is about. It should come naturally. Just be aware that you will use these keywords in other places.

Best Practices for Using Headings

Your page should be divided into logical sections with headings. These headings should use the H3 heading. All you need to do is highlight your text in WordPress and choose Heading 3 from the drop down box at the top of the text editing window.

WordPress visual icon bar

You must be in visual mode to see these options and also have the kitchen sink option opened up. To make sure you have the kitchen sink option you must click the icon to the far right that looks like the image below.

Your page should naturally include your keywords I these headings. If they don’t then either your keywords are incorrect or you’re writing about a completely different topic.

How to Use Image Alt tags

Images should always use Alt tags. These are alternative descriptions to the image that will appear in browsers that don’t display images or browsers used by blind people.

These Alt tags should include your keywords. You enter these when inserting your image. The Alternate Text area is where you should put these keywords. The keywords must explain the image. Otherwise don’t use them.

What are Meta tags and how do you use them?

If you are using the SmallBiz Small Business WordPress Theme you will have three more fields at the bottom of your screen when creating a new page or post. They are Meta Title, Meta Description and Meta Keywords.

You should enter the title you want to appear in your search results into the Meta Title field. This title should include your keywords. It must be less than 70 characters. This is the maximum number of characters that Google will display.

You should enter the description you want to appear in your search results into the Meta Description field. The description should be 150 characters or less. If you don’t enter anything into this field Google will use the first 150 characters of your webpage.

You should enter your keywords and keyword phrases into the Meta Keywords field. Don’t go crazy here. Just enter the phrases or words that you think people will use to find your page. Separate them by a comma.
